The Warwickshire village of Kineton lies on the River Dene and is part of the district of Stratford –on-Avon. It is located about 10 miles from Banbury and the same distance from Warwick, and was the home of race meetings organised by the North Warwickshire Hunt group in the mid-1800s. However, the first record of a meeting in the village was part of the annual Statute Fair on Saturday 3rd October 1840 across fields 3 miles from the village. The opening Hurdle race went to Miss Elbow for Mr Cattern, while the Sweepstake was won by Mad Moll. After racing a special dinner was held at the Swan Inn. Annual events of this nature continued until 1864 when the North Warwickshire Hunt helped organise a meeting on Wednesday 30th March. The meeting on Easter Monday 1865 opened with a match in which the outsider of two, Huntsman beat sole rival Nimrod. The Farmer’s Steeplechase was won by Mr Bawcutt’s Eily O’Connor, while the valuable Kineton Chase fell to Mr Garratt’s Emblematic. The final meeting at Kineton took place on Monday 5th April 1869, after which the course hosted point to point meetings. Further meetings by the North Warwickshire did take place at Packington in 1873 and Campion Hill, Leamington Spa between 1875 and 1909. |
